Google yesterday announced the latest progress and plans for sustainable development. Google stated that its sustainable development goals have gone better than expected, and that it has "overweighted" the sustainable development goals.
Achieve sustainable development goals for new products ahead of schedule
Last year, Google set a goal to include recycled materials in all new products by 2022. This year, Google achieved this goal ahead of schedule. The company's Pixel and Nest product series launched this year are made of recycled materials.
For example, the latest Nest Audio shell components (including sound insulation fabrics) contain 70% recycled plastics and use sustainable fabrics.
Nest Audio housing components (including soundproof fabrics) contain 70% recycled plastic.
For another example, the latest Nest Thermostat temperature control device edge trim board is made of 75% post-consumer recycled plastic.
50% of materials will be recyclable or renewable by 2025
Google said that it now firmly believes that recycling waste plastics and preventing waste plastic pollution are achievable goals.
Google will increase its sustainability goals, and the company promises that by 2025, at least 50% of the plastic materials used in all products can be recycled or renewable.
Google said that this goal will greatly exceed the industry standard, and hopes that this is a new milestone for companies to design products without waste plastic, pollution-free and extend the life of materials.
Complete the "Zero Waste Landfill" certification in 2022
Google believes that maintaining the sustainable development of product materials is one of the key aspects, but it is equally important to deal with the waste generated in the product manufacturing process.
Google said that all aspects of the supply chain will generate waste. After the company understands the production of each link and how to deal with production waste, it has decided to complete the zero-waste landfill certification for all foundries by 2022 to promote waste recycling.
This certification means that most of the plastic waste in production operations will be recycled and reused.
Achieve plastic-free packaging by 2025
Google said it will continue to maintain 100% carbon-neutral product transportation, and hopes to eliminate trouble for product recyclers through sustainable and recyclable product packaging. Therefore, by 2025, Google will achieve product packaging 100% plastic-free and 100% recyclable.
Google said that to achieve this goal, they need to find more alternative, recyclable and renewable materials to protect their products. Google will work with supplier partners to discuss new solutions with the industry.
In addition to Google, there are other electronic product companies that are also moving towards sustainable development. For example, Xiaomi said on Twitter a few days ago that it will start from Europe and reduce the plastic used in its packaging by 60%.
This plan to reduce packaging waste may be the first to be implemented on Xiaomi 10T Lite. However, Xiaomi’s reduction of plastic use only involves the retail version of the outer packaging box, not the internal parts of its mobile phone. Users will still get all the accessories. Including the charger box USB-C cable, and a transparent protective cover.
