According to the latest report issued by the European plastics recycling Union, European recyclers need to recycle at least 15 million tons of waste plastics each year to manufacture recycled products if they want to achieve the EU's strategic goal of recycling plastics. The EU aims to use 10 million tons of recycled plastic raw materials in the manufacture of new products by 2025. The European plastics recycling union is committed to achieving Europe's strategic goals for plastics and other related goals through voluntary commitments. Its members include 245 participants in the plastic industry chain, both public and private.
According to a report on the status of the waste plastics collection and classification industry, the total amount of waste plastics to be collected is calculated by assuming that the current output rate is about 70%. The estimated production is derived from monitoring the market capacity of waste plastics between 2016 and 2019. During this period, 21 million tons of waste plastics were collected from the fields of construction products, packaging, agriculture, electronic appliances and automobiles. Of these wastes, about 9.2 million tons are classified as renewable raw materials and supplied to recyclers around the world. 7.5 million tons went to recyclers in Europe, who then produced 5.2 million tons of recycled plastics, about 70% of the total investment.
The alliance currently plans to investigate areas in Europe that have not yet been developed and have great potential in waste sorting and recycling, and will publish the results of this work in 2021. One of the reasons for the difference between the total amount of waste plastics collected and the final output is that some wastes are not recyclable. In order to solve this problem, the alliance plans to improve the recyclable design of 19 priority products, and identify more categories in 2021 and make design changes to improve recyclability.
