According to Xinhua news agency, the Macao SAR law "restrictions on the provision of plastic bags" came into force on the 18th. The law clearly states that, in addition to two exemptions, merchants must charge Macao $1 for each plastic bag in their retail activities, not free of charge.

These two exemptions include food or medicine that are not packaged in advance, or goods sold in specific areas of the airport.

Before the law came into force, the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Macao SAR Government continued to carry out extensive publicity on law popularization, including publicity in different regions, holding introductions to government departments, industries and the public, holding lectures with the theme of plastic reduction in many schools, and publicity to tourists at various entry-exit ports and tourist hot spots with the Tourism Bureau and other departments.

When necessary, the merchants suggest that only appropriate number and size of plastic bags should be provided to practice plastic reduction together.

In August this year, the Legislative Council of the Macao Special Administrative Region passed the law of restricting the provision of plastic bags in detail, which stipulates that except for a few specific commodities and shopping places, plastic bags shall not be provided for free in all retail activities. Those who violate the law will be fined 1000 Macao dollars per plastic bag.
